When selecting antivirus software for your home or business you must consider more than the detection rate of a software in controlled tests. You must also be sure it can effectively detect new viruses and other malware. The virus writers are always searching for ways to beat antivirus software. They create viruses that disable them, hide from the detection techniques, or overcome the antivirus software itself.
One of the earliest types of antivirus programs was to compare files received by devices to their database of known malware. This is a kind of signature detection that is quite effective for older malware, but the issue is that virus authors can create signatures for different types of viruses at any time and the antivirus security would always be playing catch-up.
More modern versions of antivirus protection employ the heuristic method to identify potential threats. Heuristics do not search for exact matches, but rather analyze the underlying patterns of files and software to see whether they match known malware.
